Building a Custom Blinds Business

Sherri Tafoya is a true American success story. Twenty-two years ago, Sherri set out to find a way to help people, to have more flexibility with her family and to generate an income that would allow her to quit her full-time job. After much deliberation, including everything from dog walking to babysitting, Sherri came up with the idea of a Custom Blinds business, providing and window coverings that were affordable and reliable for homes and businesses.

Initially, the company was launched under the name of Custom Blinds for Less Inc. Sherri took one of her sons, Quinn, and went door-to-door handing out pamphlets to every new home throughout the Lincoln community. She even contacted potential customers through homeowners’ lists she found online. After delivering and calling endlessly, Sherri finally got her first response. A woman and her husband were so impressed by the at-home pamphlet delivery that they placed Sherri’s first order. Sherri’s goal was to be able to make enough money to quit her full-time job in 9 months so she could focus on Custom Blinds for Less Inc. That was in February and on Good Friday that same year, Sherri put in her notice. She believed that her first project, prayers, faith, family, and friends were all she needed, and she was right.

Building a Successful Company

After her first project, Sherri and her close friend, Joe Micek, ran the Custom Blinds business one home at a time. They did the window covering projects and installations together for four years. She even employed her sons occasionally for assistance. After four years, Sherri began hiring more employees and opened her first showroom. Today, Custom Blinds & Design employs 28 people who work out of two showrooms. Joe is still a full-time installer in the Omaha market and continues to be an important part of Custom Blinds’ journey. Sherri believes her strong faith has helped her stay on the right path to growing the company. She also acknowledges that Custom Blinds & Design was built window by window and didn’t become successful overnight. She is extremely grateful how far she has come and how much growth her business has seen over the past 22 years.

Custom Blinds & Design specializes in the full line of Hunter Douglas window treatments, including woven wood shades, roller shades, cellular honeycomb shades, roman shades, sheers and shadings, vertical blinds, horizontal blinds, plantation shutters, and motorized window coverings.

Passing the Leadership Torch

During the early years of building the Custom Blinds business, Sherri’s son Quinn Small, spent a lot of time assisting his mom with her new business. He grew up with the knowledge and experience of working in all aspects of custom window treatments, from selling to installing to learning the management side of the business. Fast forward to today and Quinn is the CEO and now investing in the company, as well as assuming the leadership reins from his mother.

Sherri is excited for Quinn as he enters into a new role with Custom Blinds & Design. She knows that Quinn will bring new insight into the business and is proud that after so many years of watching this company grow, he can now help lead it to even more success in the future.

Sherri used her business to teach her sons the importance of making a difference and inspiring people to follow their dreams. Now, Sherri gets to watch her son continue the dream that she started 22 years ago.
